What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves techniques for administering various medications to create a more relaxing experience at our dentist's office and help eliminate anxiety. It can help time pass quickly during lengthy procedures, making it especially useful for patients who need several treatments in a single day. Whether your child's needs are simple or complex, sedation dentistry is a customizable solution designed to make dental visits easier, minimizing pain and maximizing comfort.
Our priority is to ensure your child's safety, health, and comfort throughout the process. We take the time to answer all your questions and address your fears or concerns, allowing you to feel confident and reassured about your child's care. Even if your child cannot withstand having an examination done without being sedated, we can provide judgment-free care and hospitality.
Who Can Benefit From Sedation Dentistry?
Early dental experiences shape a child's feelings about the dentist and whether they feel safe seeking the care they need later in life. Our team will determine if sedation dentistry services are the right option to help your child have a positive experience. Some common reasons for seeking out sedation dentistry include:
- Intense dental fear and anxiety
- Previous traumatic dental experiences
- Issues or sensitivities to local anesthetics
- Fear of needles and injections
- A sensitive gag reflex that makes it difficult for our dentist to work
- Sensory issues
- Difficulty sitting still during procedures
Sedation dentistry may not be suitable for every patient. You should let our team know if your child has any conditions, such as hypertension or diabetes. By informing us about your child's health and medical history, we can more safely administer sedation.
Our Sedation Dentistry Options
The options for sedation dentistry vary in speed, complexity, and customizability. Our team will determine which treatment would be most effective depending on your child's unique needs, such as their level of anxiety and the state of their oral health. We will explain the procedure to your child with kid-friendly language that can help them understand what is going to happen and give them confidence. Our office offers two options for dental sedation:
Laughing Gas: Otherwise known as nitrous oxide, this is a gentle sedative breathed in through a mask placed over the nose and mouth. It eases anxiety while also leaving the patient alert, aware of everything that happens during treatment, and able to have conversations. It usually wears off when the patient is ready to leave at the end of the appointment.
IV Sedation: This is a deeper sedation option recommended for patients with special needs or who are prone to high levels of anxiety. It is administered through a vein, so it works very quickly and allows us to continue adjusting the sedation level throughout the procedure. We work with a skilled anesthesiologist who will come in and monitor your child the entire time. Many patients fall asleep, and they will likely have no memory of the treatment. It's common for your child to be tired and groggy for a few hours after the appointment.
What to Expect After Your Appointment
You can expect our team to provide detailed instructions on caring for your child after their procedure. Depending on the level of and how your child reacts to sedation, they may be back to normal soon after the appointment or be drowsy for several hours post-procedure. We recommend encouraging your child to relax, as rest is essential to helping the body recover, especially after lengthier treatments. If you have any questions or concerns after your appointment, don't hesitate to contact our office.
